Michigan fired football coach Sherrone Moore for cause in late 2025.
A new report conducted by an outside law firm found that the University of Michigan overlooked warning signs before it fired former football coach Sherrone Moore for an affair with an assistant.
The findings, which have not been publicly released, were reported by The Wall Street Journal . ESPN also reported on the findings and said the university’s Board of Regents will discuss them at a meeting Thursday.
Although Moore was fired in December, questions about his behavior were swirling for more than a year before, according to the Journal . In late August 2024, Michigan Athletic Director Warde Manuel noted concerns about Moore’s close relationship with Paige Shiver, his executive assistant. The report found that Manuel had told Moore at the time that Shiver could no longer accompany him on trips.
But a physical relationship existed since at least January 2022, according to the findings. Allegations about the relationship between Shiver and Moore—who is married—began circulating in 2024, the report found, including a hotline complaint, which Manuel received that year.
After his firing, Moore confronted Shiver at her home and reportedly threatened self-harm. He was subsequently arrested and charged with felony home invasion and two misdemeanors. This spring, he struck a deal and pleaded no contest to two misdemeanors, malicious use of a telecommunication device in a domestic relationship and trespassing. In exchange, the felony home invasion charge was dropped. Moore was later sentenced to 18 months of probation.
